A GIC is similar to a special savings account that you set up before leaving for Canada. It is part of the RBC International Student GIC Program and provides a secure option for you to save funds for your schooling and living costs in Canada. This GIC also shows the Canadian government that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses.

Your money is safe because it is insured by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC), and it will earn a certain amount of interest for a set period of time. The Canadian government has set a minimum amount you need for this, currently at CAD 20,635.

No, the recent update states that spouses can only obtain an open work permit if the primary student is pursuing a master’s program. Spouses of undergraduate students are no longer eligible for an open work permit according to this new policy.

Previously, international students were eligible for a one-year work permit after completing a one-year program. Now, there is a recent change where students can receive a three-year work permit completing a one-year program.

If you don’t qualify for the Canadian Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), there’s still an option to work in Canada after completing your studies. In this case, you’ll need to obtain a Canada work permit instead.

The acceptable study gap in Canada depends on the chosen educational level. For undergraduate students, a two-year study gap is typically accepted, while postgraduate students are generally allowed a five-year study break.

A minimum of 60% (regular school) to 70% (open schooling) in the final year of high school (Class 12) is considered for undergraduate admission in Canadian universities. However, specific requirements vary by university and program.
