A GIC is similar to a special savings account that you set up before leaving for Canada. It is part of the RBC International Student GIC Program and provides a secure option for you to save funds for your schooling and living costs in Canada. This GIC also shows the Canadian government that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses.

Your money is safe because it is insured by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC), and it will earn a certain amount of interest for a set period of time. The Canadian government has set a minimum amount you need for this, currently at CAD 20,635.
